Crystallization: Challenges and Opportunities for Process Development

  • Crystallization
  • 3 March 2026

About the webinar

Crystallization remains one of the most complex and impactful stages in pharmaceutical process development, determining critical attributes such as purity, particle size distribution, and downstream processability.

This presentation from guest speaker Ana Cruz - Senior Scientist at Hovione, will review some of the challenges inherent to scale-up and outlines strategies for achieving robust and controlled crystallization.

Case studies discussion will highlight the integration of solubility modeling, and process monitoring to optimize particle properties, yield, cycle time and product quality. Advanced methodologies, including spherical agglomeration, are explored as innovative approaches to enhance particle properties, improve filtration performance and formulation. Emphasis is placed on data-driven decision-making and risk mitigation to ensure scalability and reproducibility in industrial conditions.

Guest speaker

Ana Cruz, PhD

Senior Scientist at Hovione

Ana joined Hovione’s Process Chemistry Development team in 2009 to work on the development of chemical processes for manufacturing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).

Graduated in Applied Chemistry from the Faculty of Science and Technology of Lisbon (FCT-UNL) in 2004, followed by a PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Bath with Professor Michael Willis.

Her current main interests are related with the development of innovative and robust processes for API manufacture, focusing on green chemistry, catalysis, crystallization and modelling approaches.
